The .com domain market is extremely profitable, but als saturated and very competitive.
If you specialize in country domains .de is a great field to get started because Germans love their .de domains and there is a lot of money to be made by PPC and other methods of monetization (much more than, for example china, where clickprizes and value per customer is still very low in comparison).
Big business is going after generic domains. Huge corporations like Disney, Honda, Nestle, Procter & Gamble and the Bank of America all spent big bucks on generic domains like Meals.com, Toothpaste.com, Laundry.com etc.
